The CVO sets all licensing requirements for veterinarians under the Veterinarians Act of 1989 and Ontario Regulation 1093. Veterinarians in Ontario work in private practices (animal clinics), laboratories, zoos, conservation areas and reserves, government and industry.

A veterinary assistant or technician involved in clinical practice must work under the supervision of a licenced veterinarian. The Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) is an organization of veterinary technicians in Ontario. For more information:

Out-of-Province Licence Holders in Canada

Holders of a licence or certificate to practice veterinary medicine in another Canadian province or territory may apply for an equivalent licence in Ontario. They are deemed to have met the academic, training and exam requirements for a general licence and are in good standing with a regulatory body in another jurisdiction in Canada.

Their applications will be assessed under the labour mobility provisions relating to the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) and the Ontario Labour Mobility Act (OMLA).  These AIT-related provisions enable application on the basis of holding a current Canadian out-of-province licence.  Note, however, that the usual proof of credentialing requirements and fees still apply.

Two different applications are provided for this purpose:

  1. For holders of full unrestricted licenses,
  2. For holders of a full licence with defined practice, Special, Limited, Restricted or any similar licence.

Note: All applications under category 2 require review by the College's Registration Committee for decision on whether to approve the application and impose terms, conditions or restrictions equivalent to those on the out-of-province licence.
