CVO - The College of Veterinarians of Ontario

About the CVO

The College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) regulates the practice of veterinary medicine in Ontario to protect the public interest. The CVO is not a school or university and is financed primarily by the licence fees of veterinarians in Ontario. The CVO licenses veterinarians, inspects and accredits veterinary facilities and investigates complaints and concerns with veterinarians. The CVO also establishes and maintains standards of practice and disciplines veterinarians who are guilty of professional misconduct.

The CVO is governed by a council of 13 veterinarians elected from 12 geographical constituencies and 4 public members who are appointed by the lieutenant-governor by orders-in-council. Members of the college (veterinarians), through their councillors, may influence policy but councillors must always make decisions in the best interest of the public.

The veterinary profession in Ontario has been regulated since 1874.
